Meet the Doctor

A native of Pittsburgh, PA, Dr. Schmitt earned a B.S. in Biology at Bowling Green State University in Ohio in 1992. In June of 1996 he earned a Doctorate of Chiropractic from Life University in Atlanta, Georgia. He is a member of the North Carolina Chiropractic Association, Americand Academy of Pain Management, the World Cervicogenic Headache Society, and the Academy of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Organizations. Dr. Schmitt is board certified in the advanced chiropractic technique known as Atlas Orthogonal and uses many other techniques as well. Since 1998, Dr. Schmitt has received over 1,000 referrals from local Charlotte and Monroe medical physicians. Dr. Schmitt is an in-network provider with over forty insurance plans including Aetna, Blue Cross, Cigna, and Medicare.
As the founder of Atlas Chiropractic, Dr. Schmitt has been freeing people from pain in his clinic in for 12 years now. As a Chiropractor with experience, Dr. Schmitt has a long history of co-managing very difficult cases and communicating with local spine specialists if the situation warrants. Dr. Schmitt is committed to promoting the health and well being of his patients.
Dr. Schmitt lives in Waxhaw with his wife, Holly, and their children Sam, Anthony, Haley and Evan. He enjoys playing and coaching soccer for his children, gardening, and staying in shape with regular exercise. Family favorites include camping, movie night, skiing, monopoly, playing the Wii and attending church together.
A native of Detroit, MI, John M. Bovard, D.C., earned his undergraduate degree in business studies from Western Michigan University. In 1996 he earned his Doctorate of Chiropractic at Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis, MO. Dr. Bovard moved to Matthews in 1998 and started practicing at that time. Dr. Bovard joined Atlas Chiropractic in August 2009. Dr. Bovard had his first chiropractic treatment at the age of 5, but didn’t think of pursuing it as a career until after college and working in the corporate world for a year. Dr. Bovard opened Bovard Chiropractic Center in Matthews in March of 1999.
To further his education, Dr. Bovard earned his post-graduate certification in acupuncture, which led to exploring light therapy. In 2007 he studied low level laser therapy (LLLT) under Jeffrey Spencer, MA, DC, team chiropractic physician to Lance Armstrong and the United States Postal Service Professional Cycling Team 1999 – 2007. “Doctor Spencer’s involvement in the Tour de France has placed him on the cutting edge of light therapy. Applying his techniques has helped to improve the results we see in a variety of soft tissue conditions.”
Dr. Bovard lives in Matthews with his son Sean (6) and daughter Leah (5). When he’s not chasing after Sean and Leah, he enjoys golf and running and attending church with his family.
